Walhowdon Farm is exclusively a registered Holstein dairy that pushes the limits of our herds genetic quality.

The Cows

About the herd:

We currently have 15 excellent graded cows, while all of our Holsteins are graded these are our current stars! Our farm works toward steady genetic improvement of cows that have a balance between production and type. The areas we are focusing on most are improving milk components through genetics and feed quality and we are gradually shifting our type to produce what we view as functional type. We are working hard to maintain the strength and power throughout while having exceptional udders and functional correct legs and rumps allowing for a long lived healthy cow that will stand the test of time. We do this by carefully selecting the bulls we use in our breeding program and from there we individually mate each cow.

We also focus on a few families that we find exemplify what we are looking for in the herd and we have focused on these brood cows to try to care on these lines. Stomp (7th lact.), Trey (5th lact), and Unit (5th lact) have shown these traits. Stomp has 15 descendants, Trey has 8 descendants, and Unit has 10 descendants. Stomp is currently over 200,000 # for production, but we hope Unit and Trey will both do that with another lactation or 2. These 3 cows are all descendants of the original cows we have been known for, Mary, Fancymay, and Kamay. Trey and Stomp via W. Choice K Alexis, while Unit descends from BW Marshall Halo-ET.

We have previously sold bulls into stud, and we currently sell herd bulls. Our best known bulls have been W. BW Marshall Harry- ET, and W. Russell Cobra. Harry sold 870,000 units of semen for Accelerated Genetics, and Cobra was sold by Select Sires, primarily in Canada.
